Paul McDonald Smith OAM

FVAS, FRSA

Artist, Painter, Tutor.

 

Paul started painting in his early teens influenced by the work of renowned Australian artist Sir William Dargie CBE. Since then he has made a 47 year full-time a career of painting in the tradition of tonal impressionism working mostly in oil.

 

His studies include Fine Art RMIT, private study 1973-’79 and the Camberwell Travel Scholarship for European study in 1986. He tutored painting classes and workshops from 1977 in Melbourne and interstate.

 

Well known for his paintings of flowers and still life, Paul’s work includes landscape, portrait and figure painting. He has judged many art competitions throughout five states of Australia since 1982 including Chairman of the Judging panels of TASART, 2010 and 2016, Esk Art Awards Launceston 2019, Victor Harbor 2008, Camberwell Rotary 2001 and 2002 and many others. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2005 for services to the Visual Arts as a painter and lecturer.

 

Paul has received over 100 major awards for painting including the Artist of the Year at the Victorian Artists Society 2001, the Norman Kaye Medal 1998 and 1999 along with countless commendations awards since 1974.

 

His work is held in Public Regional collections including, Mildura Regional Art Gallery, Wangaratta Art Gallery, Bright Art Gallery, Maroondah City Council Art Collection, Moreland City Art Collection, Balranald Shire Gallery NSW, Shire of Murrindindi Collection, Central Goldfields Art Gallery - Maryborough amongst others, along with Institutional, Corporate and Private collections throughout Australia and overseas.

 

Immediate Past President of the historic Twenty Melbourne Painters Society, he is a Fellow, Past President and Honorary Life Member of the Victorian Artists Society where he taught oil painting for 33 years.

 

Paul is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts London and former Chairman of the A.M.E. Bale Scholarship Judging and Advisory Panel 2003-2014. Past President of the Glen Eira Cheltenham Art Group, Life Member of the Box Hill Art Group, Honorary Member of the Hobsons Bay Art Society and appointed Victorian Representative of the Royal Art Society of NSW, Sydney.

 

Author of Mavericks and Masters - the 100 year history of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society, his bibliography includes: Who’s Who in Australia;  State Library of Victoria - Oral History Interview; Victorian Artists Society 1870 - 2020; VAS Journal, many editorial, biographical, curatorial and instructional publications.
