The Rotary Easter Art Show History

Chairman: K.Beresford

The first Easter Art Show was conducted by the Rotary Club of Drysdale in 1976 with Howard Peel as chairman. The venue was the Queenscliff Town Hall. The newly formed ladies committee headed by Mrs Pat Peel organised stalls for handcraft, knitted garments, cakes and served morning and afternoon teas.

The paintings came from wherever the club could interest artists including some from Geelong Gaol. From humble beginnings the show has developed over the 30 years with professional organization and consistently high standard exhibits.

In the early years the annual event quickly expanded and was transferred to the ECO Centre at the Queenscliff High School. This was great for displaying more art but had few amenities for the ladies so everything had to be brought including the oven and refrigerators to enable them to conduct the caf.
The State Education Department built a new school at Drysdale and the Queenscliff School was decommissioned. Rotary moved to the Parks Hall at Portarlington and held several successful art shows there until there was a tenancy problem with Easter bookings for the hall.

Rotary then transferred the show to the Potato Shed at Drysdale and after three years the venue became too small.

The Art Show Committee explored venues in the district and successfully negotiated to use the Leopold Indoor Neighbourhood Centre (LINC) at Leopold Primary School.

The 2012 venue is to be at the Drysdale Christian College Sports Stadium
